5Scope3mistakesthatwillcostyouin2027
Discover the 5 Scope 3 mistakes 80% of companies make, and how to fix them before the 2027 rules turn them into a real problem.
- believed their sustainability data would survive scrutiny
- fully trusted that number
- the new SBTi V2.0 significance threshold
- days to fix it, in the right order
For ten years, Scope 3 was judged by a single question: does the number exist? From 2027 the question changes to how you calculated it, what you left out, and whether you can prove it. Around 80% of an average company’s footprint lives in its value chain, and roughly the same share of companies measure it with methods the new framework will penalise.
This guide walks through the five most common Scope 3 mistakes, why each one was good practice three years ago, and what they will cost you under the SBTi Net-Zero Standard V2.0, the GHG Protocol Scope 3 revision, and the new CSRD scope after Omnibus I.
What you will find in the document
- The 4 dated 2027 regulatory changes, and what each one forces you to prove.
- The 5 mistakes one by one: 67% coverage versus 5% significance, spend versus carbon data, real supplier data versus euro-based allocation, spreadsheet versus line-level traceability, and “Omnibus took me out of scope”.
- A 10-statement self-diagnosis to see how many mistakes you are making today.
- A 90-day action plan in three blocks: diagnosis, traceability, and value chain.
Why the bar has moved
None of the five mistakes is a slip. All five were good practice three years ago. The bar moved and the inventories did not. Until 2026 it was enough to publish a Scope 3 figure. From 2027, verification stops being optional where it matters: CSRD requires assurance, the SBTi V2.0 reinforces inventory verification and resets the base year every five years, and the GHG Protocol revision proposes a 95% coverage floor with a mandatory breakdown by data type.
If you operate in Spain, none of this repeals RD 214/2025, which already requires a carbon footprint and a five-year reduction plan. And your large customers are still in scope, so their Scope 3 is your Scope 1 and 2.
One inventory that survives 2027
None of the five mistakes is fixed by measuring more, it is fixed by measuring with a record: which method, which factor, which version, and who validated it. That is the whole difference between an inventory that exists and one that holds up.
